Karen’s 28 Day Success
I took the 28 Day Shape Up Challenge because I needed the kick start. After the birth of our second daughter, my husband and I decided to pack up the girls and take an extended Christmas Vacation to visit our families in Newfoundland. With two families in two different towns, we had two Christmas’! I overindulged on awesome East Coast cuisine, drinks and desserts. There was also never a shortage of hands to help with the girls.
Weight Gain Wake Up Call
Once we returned in January, I was completely overwhelmed. On top of trying to settle the girls into a routine again, I had to get used to taking care of them alone while my husband was at work. January was a rough month for me to say the least. I had gained a lot of weight and was feeling depressed and exhausted. I decided to start the 28 Day Shape Up Challenge on Feb 1. I lost 9 pounds and 8 1/2 inches. I gained so much energy and my mood drastically improved!
Bad Habits and Realization
What I realized the most through the challenge, was that I was feeling so awful because I was treating myself that way. I would drink cup after cup of coffee in the morning because I was so tired and had to look after my girls all day. Before I knew it, it was 2pm and I hadn’t eaten anything. Then I’d make horrible food choices. The plastic trays of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies at Fortinos had become a major food group.
Mommy Makeover
I started following the 28 Day meal plan, I was eating good food and eating regularly throughout the day. My energy levels improved significantly. I drank my lemon water in the mornings, had my breakfast, and surprisingly I didn’t need the coffee that I had been surviving on for so long. I didn’t feel like a lump on the couch anymore and I was able to start exercising again. The Challenge helped me get in the routine of planning out meals, grocery shopping and scheduling in times to exercise.
Despite having a diastasis (abdominal separation), I was able to modify the workouts and still get great results. Though I have finished the challenge, I still continue the healthy eating habits and exercise routine. I am still busy with my girls, but I am happier and much more equipped to take care of them.
